As spring transitions into early summer in the Phoenix Valley, a uniquely beautiful event takes place—Palo Verde bloom season. These iconic desert trees, known for their green bark and brilliant yellow flowers, burst into bloom and bring vibrant color to the landscape. However, with their beauty comes a challenge: heavy bloom drop.
At DBL, we want to keep our clients informed and prepared during this natural cycle. Here’s what you need to know.
What Are Palo Verdes and Why Do They Bloom So Heavily?
Palo Verdes (Parkinsonia species) are native to the Sonoran Desert and thrive in Arizona’s dry, warm climate. In late spring, they bloom in dense clusters of small, yellow flowers, creating a spectacular display across streets, medians, and HOA properties.
This bloom typically lasts 4–6 weeks and can vary slightly depending on temperatures and rainfall patterns. As beautiful as it is, the bloom also brings a significant amount of flower drop, creating noticeable debris on turf, granite, and walkways.
Why Palo Verde Debris is a Challenge
Unlike leaves that fall gradually in autumn, Palo Verde blossoms shed rapidly and in large volumes over a short period. Since the bloom isn’t isolated to one area or one week, every property with these trees is affected simultaneously—sometimes overnight.
While the flower drop is entirely natural and non-damaging, it does cause concerns about cleanliness and property appearance, especially in commercial and HOA-managed landscapes.
How DBL Manages Palo Verde Bloom Debris
At DBL, we understand the expectations of property owners and residents. While we can’t prevent the bloom, we’ve built a process to manage it as efficiently as possible:
- ✅ Regularly Scheduled Cleanups: Our crews continue to remove debris during your weekly maintenance visits. We prioritize walkways, high-visibility areas, and turf zones to maintain a clean, professional appearance.
- ✅ Strategic Equipment Use: We use blowers, vacuums, and sweepers to manage large-scale flower drop and ensure granite and hardscape areas stay tidy.
- ✅ Client Education: We want to be transparent: our crews are not able to be on-site daily for every property due to the bloom’s widespread nature. However, you can count on DBL to provide consistent, reliable cleanup on our scheduled service days.
What Can Property Owners Do?
While DBL will handle the cleanup as part of our maintenance plan, we encourage clients to:
- • Be patient and informed: This is a short-lived natural cycle.
- • Avoid irrigation schedule changes during the bloom.
- • Notify your Account Manager if excessive debris is creating safety hazards or blocking drainage pathways.
